On a hot and stifling summer night more typically experienced in Warren, TX, Westfield Blue traveled to Warren, NJ for an early season matchup. Tyler opened the game with a double down the left field line. After a stolen base and a line shot by Rowan that was snagged by a leaping shortstop, Steven knocked in Tyler on a ground out to 2nd base for Westfield's first run.
Parker got the nod for Westfield Blue. Tossing a mixture of fast balls and curve balls, Parker kept the Warren hitters off balance. Warren did manage to score in the bottom of the first; however the damage was limited to just one run when Daniel converted a second and third, two out ground ball for the third out. Score after 1: Tied at 1 -1.
Both offenses went down quietly in the second inning, with but one walk for Warren and one single by Westfield's Justin Lin. Score after 2: Tied at 1-1.
JD and OB opened the third inning with consecutive singles, but the next three batters were retired to end the threat. Warren plated two runs in the third on a two run blast by the #3 hitter. The damage could have been much worse but for two fine plays made by Tyler to open the inning. Score after 3: 3-1 Warren.
Westfield broke the game open in the fourth. Rowan opened the frame with a single and Steven followed with a blast over the center fielder for a triple and the first run. Justin knocked Steven in with a single. After a single by George, Cameron followed with a triple to score two. Cameron then scored Westfield's fifth run in the inning on JD's rbi ground ball. Cameron retired Warren in the fourth without a run. Score after 4: 6 - 3 Westfield.
Westfield added an insurance run in the 5th on two walks and a single by Rowan. Warren made it a game by scoring two in the bottom of the fifth with back-to-back doubles. Rowan relieved Cameron to stifle the rally. Score after 5: - 7 - 5 Westfield.
Both teams went down quietly in the sixth, with Rowan retiring the side in the bottom half securing the save. Parker gets credit for the win in this well played league contest. Final score: 7 - 5 Westfield.
