7/12/10-Berkeley Heights
Westfield Blue continued its winning streak Monday night with a victory over Berkeley Heights.
A rock-solid defense, featuring J.D. on the mound, shut down Berkeley Heights at the top of the first inning. When it was Westfield’s turn at bat, Rowan whacked a double and stole third base, followed by a Steven’s walk. In a well-orchestrated play during a series of unsuccessful pick-offs, Rowan and Steven both made it home. The result was a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
Berkeley Heights responded with solid hitting in the top of the second inning, taking over a threatening 4-2 lead. Despite a hard hit to right field by O.B., Berkeley Heights’ 4-2 lead was carried into the third inning.
Westfield fared no better in the third inning and, despite unyielding pitching by Tyler and a hard-hit single by Daniel, Berkeley Heights strengthened its lead by one.
Westfield pulled ahead in the fourth inning. At the top of the inning, Steven’s solid pitching was reinforced when Tyler snagged a line drive to end BH’s at-bats. Then Westfield’s offense took over. Rowan walked, stole second, and scored on a nice line drive double by Steven, bringing the score to 5-3. After the bases were loaded with walks by Cameron and Justin, George’s walk sent Steven home, narrowing BH’s lead to 5-4. When Parker got a turn at the plate, he banged an impressive single, resulting in two RBIs that put Westfield ahead by one. Westfield was retired when JD’s shot to center was snagged.
A scoreless fifth inning was punctuated by O.B.’s catch deep in right field.
The sixth inning, dubbed by some as the “Inning of Rowan,” began with Rowan catching a pop-up for the first out. He then caught a hard-hit grounder and threw it to George, who masterfully tagged out the tying run. Rowan put BH to bed with a well-executed final strikeout.
